Ellie’s Disney Dream!

Eight‐year‐old Ellie Pugh from Leigh in Lancashire recently had her dearest wish to go to Disneyland Paris granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

In September 2012, Ellie was diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease, which is an inflammatory bowel  disease that  causes  her  a significant  amount  of  pain  and  means she requires lots of medication and hospitals visits. Ellie has been very brave but she has really struggled with the condition and she has lost some of her confidence as a result.

Despite all the challenges she has faced, Ellie tries to not let her illness hold her back.  Her mum Donna describes her as a “loving, cheeky, quick‐witted little girl”, who is “beautiful, inside and out”. Ellie was referred to Starlight for a wish by one of the play team at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which is where she is treated, and she decided to ask for a trip to Disneyland Paris with her family.

Ellie loves all things Disney and she thought it would be a magical experience to meet all her favourite characters at the world‐famous resort. Before the wish, her mum Donna told Starlight, “We would love Ellie to have some fun and forget about her pain and problems for a few hours.”

The charity arranged a wonderful three day trip for Ellie and her parents, Donna and Anthony, her sister Bethany, aged 12, and her little brother Connor, aged 3, to visit Disneyland Paris at the end of June. The family flew from Manchester International to Paris, before heading to their Disney hotel, the wonderful, nautical‐themed Newport Bay. The hotel is just a short distance from the park and has beautiful views of Lake Disney so it was the perfect place for them to relax after days full of Disney delights!

Ellie  loved  every  moment  of  her special trip,  from  meeting her  favourite Disney characters, including  Mickey  and Minnie Mouse, Pluto and Winnie  the  Pooh’s  Rabbit,  to  watching  the amazing nighttime show, Disney Dreams, with its laser projections and fireworks. It really was a dream come true for this brave, young Disney fan!

On their return, Ellie’s mum  Donna  said, “We are home from the most amazing time in Disneyland. The only way to describe this experience is truly magical. I have never seen so many beautiful sights in my life. To see the look on all the children’s faces were priceless, but to see Ellie so overcome with emotion as we watched the Disney Dreams show on our last night, she was so overwhelmed, so thankful and just in awe of the beauty of it.

“The moment will stay with the family for a lifetime. I just cannot thank Starlight enough for absolutely  everything,  and saying thank you does not seem to  come  close to the  amount of gratitude we feel as a family.”

Ellie added that she wanted to thank everyone involved in making her dream come true!
